How the TruckPro score works
Updated · TruckPro Safety Carma
The short answer
The TruckPro score compares each of your BASIC percentiles to FMCSA’s intervention threshold for your carrier type, turns each one into a 0–100 health value, and combines them with fixed weights. Higher is healthier. It is TruckPro’s own summary, not an FMCSA safety rating, and it stays blank when there is not enough data.
Step 1: Each category becomes a health value
For every BASIC category with a percentile p, TruckPro looks up the FMCSA intervention threshold t for your carrier type (general, HazMat or passenger) and maps it to a health value from 0 to 100:
- A 0th percentile (best) is worth 100.
- Exactly at the threshold is worth 50.
- The 100th percentile (worst) is worth 0.
- Values in between scale in a straight line on each side of the threshold.
If FMCSA data shows an alert in that category, its health is capped at 49, so an alerted category can never look healthy.
Step 2: Categories are combined with fixed weights
The five core categories are weighted by how directly they relate to on-road risk. These weights are a TruckPro product choice in score version 1. They are not FMCSA weights.
| Category | Weight |
|---|---|
| Unsafe Driving | 30 |
| Hours-of-Service Compliance | 25 |
| Vehicle Maintenance | 20 |
| Driver Fitness | 15 |
| Controlled Substances/Alcohol | 10 |
| Hazardous Materials Compliance (HazMat carriers only) | 15, with the five above scaled by 0.85 |
The score is the weighted average of the available categories, rounded to a whole number. HazMat counts only for carriers FMCSA classifies as HazMat.
Step 3: No guessing when data is missing
A missing percentile is never treated as zero. TruckPro shows no total score when:
- fewer than three categories have a percentile, or
- the available categories cover less than 70% of the applicable weight, or
- any category has an FMCSA alert but no percentile, because leaving it out could make the total look better than it is.
Even without a total, every category still shows its percentile or N/A, its threshold, its alert status and where the number came from.
Where the percentiles come from
- Passenger carriers: FMCSA’s published SMS percentiles.
- Property carriers: FMCSA does not publish these publicly, so TruckPro computes monthly estimates from FMCSA’s public SMS inspection and violation data. They are labeled as TruckPro estimates.
- HazMat: a TruckPro estimate, which may be unavailable. A HazMat category with no percentile says why, for example fewer than five HazMat-relevant inspections.
The TruckPro score is TruckPro’s own private summary. It is not an FMCSA safety rating, a fitness determination, or a prediction of FMCSA action. Score version 1 is in beta. Thresholds come from the FMCSA SMS Methodology, Table 2-2.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my TruckPro score show no number?
The total is withheld when fewer than three categories have percentiles, when less than 70% of the weight is covered, or when a category has an FMCSA alert but no percentile. Category details are still shown.
Can the TruckPro score predict an FMCSA audit?
No. It summarizes the current percentiles. It does not predict FMCSA action, insurance outcomes or future score changes.
